the vast space was ample for what we were doing. We were standing on the peak of one of the mountains surrounding the bay, the dark blue waters rippling gently in the wind far below us. Beside me, Kai stood staring out onto the water, the sky grey and dim above us. We were here to train with Faol and Angus, who hadn’t arrived yet. I watched strands of Kai’s light hair flow in the wind as she stared at the sea.

‘I’ve never been outside of England,’ she said suddenly. I frowned. Where was England? ‘My home country – where I grew up,’ she said bitterly, as if reading my confused thoughts. ‘We rarely went on holidays – and when we did, we stayed near to our house in the countryside. Our mother always took us.’ I remembered again that she had a sister, who I had never seen. ‘Even with all the bad things that are happening right now, this is still incredible.’ I nodded, keeping silent. Observing her for a few seconds, I saw her take a deep breath, pushing the thoughts out of her mind. She turned to me, making an effort to smile.

‘So, what are we doing today?’

‘I’m here to teach you about the Instinct.’

‘The Instinct? What’s that?’

‘It’s like a feeling, something that controls our entire existence. In the past, before we separated ourselves from nature, we flowed with it and did as it directed. When we started to evolve, think of new ways to do things, we started, unconsciously, to push back against it. As we grew further and further away from it we tried to cut it entirely out of our existence.’

‘Why?’

‘We don’t know much, only that it happened thousands of years ago, and ever since then, we have been unable to communicate with the god that once ruled our lands – the god of peace and prosperity. That is, until he was killed by Sardaron, and our worlds were thrown into war.’ Her eyes widened, and I could tell she was thinking about what life would be like if the Ylvares had never separated from the Instinct. She wouldn’t be here, forced to fight for a people she barely knew. It was what I had thought when I arrived, four hundred years ago, young and headstrong. I had thought I would always find a way to come back home. But I had met Angus shortly after the war, and things had become more complicated. In the end, I had decided to stay – if someone ever managed to find a way to escape using the portals, it wouldn’t be me.

Behind us, I could hear warriors running onto the field, yelling at each other, gathering to fight each other. I sighed, and turned back to the ocean.

‘Why are you telling me this?’ Kai asked, hair blowing in the wind. She was dressed in fighting gear, her combat jacket wrapped around her body. She looked troubled, restless, as if she hadn’t slept for days, even though I knew that she must have.
